Saas Fee is reminiscent of Zermatt in a less glitzy way: an exceptional mountain setting, a car-free village run by small electric vehicles, numerous cable cars heading up the mountains... The village is located on a plateau above Saas-Grund and is a charming resort that can be reached by car, unlike Zermatt... However, you have to leave your car at the entrance to the village, in a hideous concrete behemoth which, fortunately, is not visible from afar...
As far as public transport is concerned, it is by post bus that one goes up to Saas Fee: there is no railway line in the Saastal, but the valley is very well served by the famous yellow post buses.
Significantly less jet-set than Zermatt, Saas-Fee is somehow far more spectacular: while on Zermatt only the characteristic silhouette of the Matterhorn stands guard, orphaned by other peaks, in Saas Fee the plateau is surrounded by peaks over 4000m in altitude, of which a good half-dozen can already be seen from the village.
The must-see attraction is the Alpine Metro, the highest in the world, opened in 1992. It connects the Felskinn cable car station on the edge of the Fee glacier to the Mittelallalin revolving restaurant at 3456m. From here, there are spectacular views of the 4000m peaks of the Mischabel massif (Allalinhorn 4027m, Alphubel 4206m, Lenzspitze 4294m, Täschhorn 4491m, Dom 4545m etc.).
