Grandvaux
A winegrowers' village just above Cully, belonging since 2011 to the new municipality named Bourg-en-Lavaux. The great graphic novelist Hugo Pratt spent the end of his life here and a statue of Corto Maltese now overlooks the breathtaking panorama of Lavaux.
This territory of 347 hectares, including around 60 hectares of vineyards, stretches from the shores of the lake to the foot of the Tour de Gourze, and the Grandvalians passed the thousand mark in 1980. They are also known as ‘casse-botoille’ (bottle breakers) or, more maliciously, ‘grandvauriens’ (great rascals).
The Village of Crot, Duboux, Duflon, Dumur, Giddey, Gorjat, Léderrey, Palaz, Parisod, Ponnaz, Riccard and Testuz is proud of its carefully maintained old houses.
One of them, the house of the Bailli Maillardoz, also known as the Convent, attracts attention with its huge roof. Another, the Buttin-de-Loës house, is a true stately home; its Renaissance hall, library and lounges feature period furniture and crockery.
And let's not forget the Auberge Communale, the Hôtel du Monde, and the Church of St Nicolas, built in 1636 on a 12th-century base. Its Romanesque tower is a listed historic monument.
Around Grandvaux, the wine estates of La Crausaz, Baussan, Crétaz, Croix-Duplex, La Grille and Clos Genevaz grace the landscape with their opulent silhouettes.
Grandvaux is also the village where the great illustrator Hugo Pratt settled and ended his days. He is remembered here through his emblematic hero Corto Maltese, whose statue contemplates the marvellous panorama offered from the village while, just below it, the Caveau des Vignerons has been christened ‘Caveau Corto’...
