Baden-Württemberg is a very large territory, the third largest Bundesland in terms of surface and population. It includes well-known tourist destinations such as the Black Forest, but so far we have only been to the southern edge of the region, which borders on Switzerland.
A few years ago, we did a photo shooting in the old town of Constance, a large city that forms a conurbation with Kreuzlingen in Switzerland. In 2022, we shot panoramas on the right bank of the Rhine and the German shore of Lake Constance.
It was a quick trip on our "Switzerland Tour outside Switzerland", but it gave us the opportunity to visit some fascinating places and made us want to discover more.
Laufenburg, a small town built at a point where the Rhine is very narrow, must be visited. The tribulations of history split it in two when the Rhine became the border between Switzerland and Germany, but a pedestrian bridge connects the two parts as if there was no border...
In Bad Säckingen, you can cross the Rhine and the border on foot over the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe. Stein, on the Swiss side, has nothing of interest except the view of the river, but the German town is beautiful.
On the German side of Lake Constance, you should take a walk through the medieval town of Meersburg, opposite Constance. It's a small town without cars and very touristy but you won't regret the visit.
Further east, opposite the Swiss town of Romanshorn, don't miss Friedrichshafen, the birthplace of the Zeppelins, the airships whose commercial operation came to a tragic end with the blaze of the Hindenburg in 1937 but which have been enjoying a renaissance since the 1990s, flying all over Lake Constance.
