Promenade to Portara (8)AbstractThe history of the Portara remains a mystery. In the 6th century BC, the tyrant Lygdamis ordered the construction of a temple measuring 59 metres long and 28 metres wide, with a peristyle of 6x12 columns, but a war broke out between Naxos and Samos, leading to the abandonment of the project. The temple remained unfinished, and even the deity to whom it was to be dedicated was forgotten.
