Curon Venosta

A surprising place on the edge of the artificial lake of Resia. In the centre of a lagoon stands the bell tower of the old village, which was swallowed up when the Resia dam was built in 1950.

The village is 5km south of the Resia Pass, but it is actually called Graun im Vinschgau. We are in a German-speaking Italian region, but during the Fascist era Mussolini wanted to Italianise the whole country and many place names were simply invented!

The name of the valley, in both German and Italian, derives from the name of the Celtic people who lived there in ancient times, the Venostes, who were among the Alpine tribes subdued by the Emperor Augustus just before our era, during the Roman conquest of Rhaetia and the Alpine arc, which was the prelude to the invasion of Germania.

An enchanting place, but the campanile is also the ghost of a tragedy that we tell you about in a virtual stroll... Click on the 360° pictogram!
