Chamois

The one and only village in Italy that can only be reached by cable car, on foot, by bike... or by plane or helicopter since the tiny "Altiporto di Chamois" is right next door!

Accessible in the past only by a mule track, Chamois has been linked to the valley floor since 1955 by a cable car which leaves from Buisson, on the road to Valtournenche. In 2001, a second cable car was inaugurated, reserved for animals and goods, which only operates on reservation.

It is the highest commune in the Aosta Valley, at 1815m, in the Valtournenche, the counter-valley of the Aosta Valley that climbs to the foot of the Matterhorn. Chamois is in fact the name of the municipality, which includes several hamlets. The main village, where the cable car arrives, is actually called Corgnolaz.

Surrounded by the highest mountains in Europe, with vast woods and meadows, rich in water and lakes. Chamois has succeeded in preserving its traditions, in its rural architecture (the "rascards", found in Valais under the name of "raccards"), in its Franco-Provençal language (Valdôtain) and in the cordiality and simplicity of its inhabitants.

It is a destination to discover in any season, to recharge your batteries, to do sports, to hike and to taste the typical Valle d'Aosta cuisine. Don't miss a walk to the lake of Lod, reachable on foot or by chairlift!
